Our Social Space has launched Step into Social, a new programme of free social dance classes designed to support mental health and wellbeing through movement, music and community.

Starting this November, Step into Social offers weekly social dance classes in East Belfast for adults living with mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression, PTSD or other conditions.

The classes are relaxed, beginner-friendly and full of rhythm, laughter and connection. Participants can dance solo, with a partner or simply move to the music - there’s no pressure, no expectations, just a chance to enjoy being part of a welcoming community.

Step into Social is Our Social Space’s flagship social dance initiative, supported by Arts Council National Lottery and The Baring Foundation, and delivered in partnership with MindWise. The project uses music and movement to help people build confidence, reduce stress and feel a stronger sense of belonging.

“Dancing isn’t just good for your body - it’s good for your mind and your mood,” says Carrie Montgomery, CEO of Our Social Space. “We’re creating a space where everyone can find joy, connection and community through dance.”

Classes are free for adults living with mental health challenges, with donation-based places available for anyone else who’d like to join.

📍 When & Where: Every Wednesday and Sunday evening, East Belfast

Our Impact

"This new life of social dancing with this group of wonderful people has been totally life changing for me.  My physical and mental health has improved ten-fold.  My confidence has grown and I have a whole new circle of supportive friends.  I now have a whole new outlook on life."

"The instructors and organisers have been fantastic in their efforts to reduce barriers for all of us.  They take into account people's personal circumstances and identify how they can help.  Particularly reducing barriers relating to confidence, health and caring responsibilities."

"As a single person, social isolation has been an issue for me in the past.  One of the greatest benefits of attending dance classes and social events is feeling part of a very supportive and caring community.  I have been able to talk to people in the dance community who have been or are going through similar personal challenges.  I'm very grateful to be part of this dance and social community and I feel very fortunate on so many levels".
