Presented by The Flicks Hut as part of the Festival of Community Cinema

We’re thrilled to announce Rooted in Rhythm - a special autumn film season from The Flicks Hut, celebrating 100 years of community cinema.

This series brings together powerful films that explore the creativity, identity, and lived experiences of Black communities whose music and movement shaped the rhythm of modern culture - and whose influence still echoes in the social dances we celebrate today.

🎬 The Films:
From the bold defiance of Do the Right Thing and the poetic truth of I Am Not Your Negro to the haunting beauty of Moonlight, Drylongso, and Night of the Kings, each screening offers a window into stories of expression, struggle, and joy.

The season closes with Singin’ in the Rain - a Hollywood classic filled with charm and brilliance, yet also a reflection of how Black musical and dance traditions were absorbed into mainstream entertainment without recognition of their origins. By including it, we invite audiences to reflect on both the beauty of shared culture and the history of erasure that accompanied it - a reminder that art, resistance, and rhythm are forever intertwined.

Through film, discussion, and shared experience, Rooted in Rhythm invites audiences to connect, reflect, and celebrate the creative spirit that moves us all.

📍 Venue: The Flicks Hut @ Our Social Space, Dance Addiction Studios, 1A Parkgate Avenue, Belfast
🗓️ When: Sunday afternoons throughout November–December
🤝 Supported by: Cinema For All bursary to celebrate 100 years of community cinema – a nationwide festival

Our Impact

"This new life of social dancing with this group of wonderful people has been totally life changing for me.  My physical and mental health has improved ten-fold.  My confidence has grown and I have a whole new circle of supportive friends.  I now have a whole new outlook on life."

"The instructors and organisers have been fantastic in their efforts to reduce barriers for all of us.  They take into account people's personal circumstances and identify how they can help.  Particularly reducing barriers relating to confidence, health and caring responsibilities."

"As a single person, social isolation has been an issue for me in the past.  One of the greatest benefits of attending dance classes and social events is feeling part of a very supportive and caring community.  I have been able to talk to people in the dance community who have been or are going through similar personal challenges.  I'm very grateful to be part of this dance and social community and I feel very fortunate on so many levels".
